TUESDAY, APRIL 3, 2012 - PCU Annual General Meeting/Elections and Social

5:00 - 6:00 pm, Room 100 in the Jackman Humanities Building (170 St. George Street).

The time has come for all undergraduate philosophy students at the St. George campus to unite! We do so in order to review what has happened this year, to suggest what we would like to see next time around, and to elect a new PCU executive that will translate all these reflections and ideas into a great 2012-13 academic year.

We will discuss a constitutional amendment proposal, which concerns replacing the current presidency and vice-presidency with a co-presidency. Please be there in order to consider and vote on this motion. (If you’re on our listserv, you’ll be receiving this amendment proposal in .pdf format shortly.)

In this election, all current executive positions are open to any undergraduate student who is/has enrolled at least in a half-credit (0.5 FCE) PHL course. The positions are as follows:

- President

- Vice-President

- Treasurer

- Secretary

- Communications Coordinator

- Special Events Coordinator

- Bioethics Liaison

Each candidate will be required to present a brief statement of interest for the position that he or she is contesting. Remember, you don’t have to be the “Elvis of Cultural Theory” to be a candidate (refer to picture above); we encourage all those qualified to run for a position!

6:00 - 8:00 pm (or much later), Back room at Gabby’s (192 Bloor St. West, across from the ROM).

After the AGM and elections, we will commence our year-end social — a celebration of another year spent pursuing The Good! Details for the location will be announced shortly; stay tuned.

The PCU is hosting another movie night! As we all near the busy end of another term, come take a well-deserved break and watch a screening of Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island.

Our very own Bioethics Liaison, Daniel Adler, will be there to complement the film by addressing the topic of mental illness (i.e. its definition and treatment).

Refreshments of sorts will be served. The film itself will be 138 minutes long (according to imdb).

IMPORTANT: Space is limited, so if you are planning to attend, please RSVP by emailing pcu.utoronto@gmail.com to confirm your spot. (This is the ONLY way to RSVP; clicking that “you’re attending” on the Facebook event does not secure you a spot.)

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2012 - Symposium on Love: Pondering Polygamy

5:00 - 8:00 pm, Room 610, Health Sciences Building (155 College Street)

We, the PCU, cordially invite you to our biggest event of the year: the annual Symposium on Love!

This year, our convivial discussion will focus on a topic of questionable love, namely the practice of polygamy. (Why, or why not, be a polygamist today?) There will be three outstanding speakers to guide us through the issue at hand:

Ronnie de Sousa, Department of Philosophy
Brenda Cossman, Faculty of Law
Lauren Bialystok, Department of Philosophy
Each speaker will present at equal lengths, and a final question period will conclude the event. And, as to maintain the standard of Greek symposia, copious amounts of food and drink (Dionysian-type excluded) will be present, along with lively conversation throughout.

We look forward to pursuing the idea of Love with you (and perhaps you, you, and you over there, too).

 After 5:00 pm, JHB417/418

A reception will take place upstairs following the talk, which will provide the opportunity to engage in more interesting discussion, to mingle with professors and fellow students alike, and to indulge in plenty of refreshments.
